Growing up, Chinese New Year was a big deal. Even though I was a second-generation Filipino-born Chinese (my parents were born and raised in the Philippines, and so was I), my birth family and community were very traditional and conservative Chinese. I always loved Chinese New Year not because of the holiday tradition itself, but because even as a kid, I synced up better with the Lunar calendar and I thought February was a better month to be celebrating the new year.
Like many immigrants, my grandparents tried to preserve the culture and traditions when they migrated from the Fujian / Xiamen in China to the Philippines in search of a better life for their children and future generations. Some of my favourite memories of Chinese New Year involved (what else) lots of food! Dim sum, especially.
(Below I share a photo of the last time I was in Hong Kong to meet my maternal grandmother, at the restaurant where we had dim sum).
Now, in my 30's, I find myself yet another diasporic generation who has immigrated to a different land (a beautiful one). My parents chose to immigrate to Canada (well, my father insists that my mother insisted that we do) when I was 12 years old. In less than three generations, our family line has left behind what's comfortable and familiar, crossed the skies and seas to plant new seeds in a strange new land twice, and survived, again. I guess that's what immigrants are known for : we are survivors and warriors.
I am completely appreciative of all the hard work and sacrifices that my parents and grand parents and their parents made so that I could be living today at a crazy yet precipitous time in history - 2022! We are truly the generation that our ancestors have been praying for.
I don't know about you, but as much as I feel I've had my share of uber-challenging cultural conditioning earlier in life (try growing up in an extremely conservative ethnic culture coupled with a deeply conservative Catholic faith), I feel really lucky and blessed at the same time... because I've had the honour and privilege of discovering personal development and inner healing when I was 15 years old, and that changed everything.
I can't say it's been a joyful journey, but it definitely was worth the 20+ years of blood, sweat and tears arriving at a place when everything I do is infused with purpose, joy, creativity and fulfillment.
I'm not sure I can ever convey this in words to my parents or relatives, but I see my own growth and evolution and soul-aligned contributions as the best tribute and honour I can ever give to them and my ancestors—even if I colour outside of the lines, even if I choose a life that is not a cookie-cutter version of success, a life that they didn't (and probably still don't) understand or agree with.
I also have looong let go of the need for their approval or for them to tell me they are proud of me “one day”. That was probably the hardest step but the most liberating.
So now I can say that I am blessed. I am blessed to have worked through most of the intergenerational and collective trauma of being born a girl in the Chinese lineage. I am blessed to live in Canada. I am blessed to share a life with Honey 🍯 Bear 🐻 and all my beautiful friends and community locally and around the world. I am blessed to experience the beauty of Mother Nature every day. I am blessed to wake up and give my gifts in service to humanity ... every single dim sum day!
And this Chinese New Year, I decided to do something super special and fun for you, in honour of my Chinese heritage and in service of your journey of birthing and growing the business and career of your dreams. I’m so excited for this opportunity! I can’t wait to meet the lucky winner. Because you are worth it, and YOU are what the world has been waiting for!

* Why Dim Sum & Why Now?
Being of Chinese heritage growing up in South East Asia, dim sum is definitely one of my favourite things about the culture I grew up in.
Dim Sum 點心 is translated as “to touch / so close the heart” and is traditionally about gathering with family and friends on weekend mornings and share bite-sized dishes served on steamer baskets or small plates. It’s one of my favourite things in the world that feels so yummy, comforting and intimate at the same time. Whenever I’ve combined business meetings with food, it’s always a hit!
2021 has been an especially blessed year for me after having a rather rough 2020 (like for a lot of people). And I am looking forward to an even better 2022! This gift to my community is my way of thanksgiving ~ giving gratitude for all the blessings and sharing the love!
When I read the statistics on small business and careers, it is being called the “Great Resignation” with millions closing their business or resigning from their jobs, and a high percentage (60-70%) thinking of closing their business due to negative Covid-19 impacts (75% impacted negatively) or a majority (73%) thinking of quitting their jobs and/or making a career change. (Sources: Small Business BC; US Dept of Labor)
I want to do my part in my community to help small businesses and career changers. Trust me, I’ve been there too!
